This fabric is called shibori. Kimonos are dyed and embroidered using a variety of techniques, one of which is the tie dyeing technique. This is a technique in which fabrics are dyed by binding them with threads or sandwiched with a device to prevent dyeing, and then dyed with dyestuffs to create complex patterns.
