Japanese Lacquer Table Shelf - Meiji Period (1868–1912) Trays Carefully restoredThis Japanese lacquer table shelf dates from the Meiji period and is decorated with exquisite gold maki e lacquer on a rich black roiro ground. Other than the reverse, each surface is adorned with finely executed floral compositions, inspired by the changing seasons, a popular decorative theme symbolising the beauty and transience of nature in Japanese art. Originally designed as a kodana (decorative table cabinet), the piece would have been displayed
