MacDonald was born in the Argentine in 1898 to British parents. At the age of two he returned with his parents to live on the Isle of Skye. He became a postcard artist, book illustrator and cartoonist. In the 1920s he was commissioned to do menu covers for Cunard and other shipping lines.
