Chinese Red Elm Book Chair - 19th Century Cushions made in the 1920'sThe paintingThese antique Chinese chairs are called 'meigui yi' or book chairs. Book chairs were unusual for Chinese chairs as they were the only style of Chinese chair made in larger sets. These chairs are constructed from red elm (jumu) wood.
